Magazine Design — Vibrations

A pitch for Everett Community College's student art magazine — my concept and execution, chosen by our team as its submission for our final project.

Selected by our team as its submission; not chosen by the college for development

Vibrations is Everett Community College's student art magazine. Our final project was to pitch a design for it. We worked as a team, but we each developed our own concept independently, and the team picked mine as the one we submitted — what follows is my concept and my execution, end to end. The college chose a different direction to develop. I still think this one holds up.

The magazine

The cover is hand-lettered rather than typeset. "Vibrations 2013" is brushed in ink above a field of inked grass, with a single blue bloom as the only colour on an uncoated cream stock. The back cover repeats the motif and shifts that bloom to gold, so the two halves read as a pair when the magazine is closed.

Inside, each feature runs as a full spread on a three-column grid: portrait and headline on the verso, the subject's work given the room it needs on the recto. The two here deliberately stress the grid from opposite directions — a full-page painting on one, a long poetry excerpt on the other — because a layout that only survives one kind of content is not a system.

Being a pitch, the content is all stand-in: the copy is greeked and the features borrow published artists — Alex Grey and Khalil Gibran — to load the pages with something real to react to. What was on the table was the layout system, not the editorial.
